Mariners preview 2010 season

4 February 2010

Since joining the competition in 2002 former perennial cellar dwellers Fraser Coast have broke through to record their best season  thus far,  finishing 5th and narrowly missing out on what would have been an inaugural finals birth for the Mariners.

Due to the performances of 2009 and a strong off season recruiting drive, head coach of three years Geoff Davis is pushing for a top four finish.  With the newly renovated fields and clubhouse as well as the return of some players from overseas travel has the Mariner's shaping as a potential threat to the top teams of the competition in 2010.

The renovations have already reaped rewards for the club with the hosting of the stingrays Queensland cup fixture vs. the Darling Downs on Saturday the 19th of February and no one is happier than wide bay development officer and Mariners president Andrew Beattie.

Beattie said it was a huge coup for the opening game of the annual championship to be played in Hervey Bay.

"All the clubs in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union competition were given the chance to host it but we got the green light which is just fantastic news," Beattie said.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity for fans here to see some high quality rugby union in their own backyard so to speak - it doesn't get any better than that."

Beattie was also keen to announce the reinstatement of an old tradition that of the coveted custard award for worst on field as an extra incentive for the boys to play well.

If you are interested in playing for the Mariners this season training is held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm on Walkers Rd oval Urangan.
