SCRU joins with Queensland Suburban Rugby Union in Exciting New Rugby Initiative.
The local senior rugby competition will take on a bold new look in 2018. Seven Brisbane Suburban Clubs will join with 4 Sunshine Coast Clubs to create a new competition which will add variety and interest for players and spectators alike.
The season for A Grade and Reserve Grade Clubs will kick off on Saturday March 24 with the Brisbane Clubs and Sunshine Coast Clubs playing each other once in each grade.
After Round 11 both Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Clubs will revert to playing each other in a further 9 rounds, culminating in local grand finals on Saturday September 1.
Points earned in the first 11 rounds will be accrued to the points tables in each local competition.
Teams involved in this “new look” competition are Caboolture, Caloundra, Goodna, Ipswich, Maroochydore, Noosa, Pine Rivers, Riverside, Springfield, University and Wynnum.
Sunshine Coast Clubs which only field Reserve Grade sides (Fraser Coast, Gympie, Maleny and Nambour) will be integrated into the local competition at Round 12.
Sunshine Coast Rugby Union President, Greg Marshall has this to say:
“We have been working for some time to broaden the involvement of local teams in a wider competition framework. The culmination of this activity shows that grass roots rugby organisations can work successfully together to expand horizons and inject new excitement and interest in rugby without compromising their traditional competitions.”
In addition to this Sunshine Coast Clubs fielding Colts (Under 19) teams will also join a competition which will include a number of Brisbane Suburban Club teams, giving a real boost for this age group. There are likely to be 8 Clubs in this competition.
