Rugby teams from New Zealand, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and other parts of Australia are currently signing up to contest the inaugural Sunshine Coast Rugby Festival to be held on the 14th and 15th July 2018.Sunshine Coast Rugby Union, organisers of the Sunshine Coast Rugby Festival, say the event will feature Rugby 10s and Rugby 7s and will be an extension of the very successful Gold Coast Rugby Carnival.
We have partnered with WorldSport who have run the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival for the past 27 years to attract a number of international and national junior rugby teams to the very first Sunshine Coast Rugby Festival, said Ian Brown, Chairman of the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union.
The festival will welcome junior boys and girls rugby teams to the Sunshine Coast for a weekend celebration of rugby, fun and friendship which will be a fantastic promotion for the sport across the region, said Mr Brown.
Deputy Mayor, Cr. Tim Dwyer believes the arrival of so many international, intrastate and interstate rugby players, officials and supporters will provide a great boost for rugby and business on the Sunshine Coast.
One of the really exciting things about this festival is its timing. It’s being held in the winter school holidays to maximise participation of teams from New Zealand and the southern states. I am sure the community and businesses across the Sunshine Coast will give them a warm welcome, said Cr. Dwyer.
For many players, officials and supporters the festival provides the opportunity to visit the Sunshine Coast for the very first time with trips to the hinterland, major attractions and beaches to be included in a full itinerary for most of our guests.
Importantly these visitors will have the opportunity to extend their stay and come back to the Sunshine Coast again and again with the convenience of direct flights available from Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne, said Cr. Dwyer
The Sunshine Coast Rugby Festival is scheduled for Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July, 2018. A minimum of 7 fields will be required to host boys teams from Under-12’s through to Under-18’s to play Rugby 10’s and girls Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18’s teams to play Rugby 7s. The Festival will be held at Lighthouse Park, Caloundra the home of the Caloundra Rugby Union Club and will also make use of fields at the neighboring Caloundra JRL Club and Caloundra High School.
