While touring is not unique to rugby it is certainly one component that sets it apart from other winter sports in Australia. This weekend in Armidale five Sunshine Coast U12 teams will experience the opportunity of their first rugby tour. with Maroochydore, Matthew Flinders, Pacific Lutheran, St Andrews and Sunshine Coast Grammar all traveling to The Armidale School Rugby Carnival in NSW for the annual TAS carnival.
The Armidale School Rugby Carnival is the largest Under 12s rugby carnival held in Australia. Each year this event attracts over 1000 young rugby enthusiasts and their coaches, along with committed families and supporters, who make the journey to Armidale.
“One of the most special things about rugby, and a foundation for our game long before it became professional, was the social aspect of the game and meeting people that you will be friends with for the rest of your life.” – Wallaby, Paddy Ryan
Sunshine Coast Grammar School have been traveling to TAS for over 10 years to introduce the benefits of rugby tours to their school program and have reached the Division 1 final on a number of occasions, while Flinders Rugby were awarded the Team of the Carnival in 2015. St Andrews, Pacific Lutheran and Maroochydore have recently joined the procession of Sunshine Coast teams that are touring each year.

“Some of the best memories of our players will be from their rugby tours and many will also experience the opportunity to play overseas”, said SCRU Chairman, Ian Brown. “One of the great benefits of rugby is that the spirit of the game is common across the globe and the opportunities with tours and playing overseas is quite unique to our game”, he said.

While supporters tours are common with many overseas tours, parents and supporters enjoy Armidale and take the opportunity with their players hosted at either the school or one of the UNE colleges to let their hair down at the local pubs and restaurants, often putting into question who enjoys the carnival more?
