Thank goodness, Rugby is back!
One of the first chances for coast fans to see the game they play in heaven will be the Palmwoods Hotel Festival of Sevens tournament taking place on Saturday, February 25 from 11.00am.
It’s the fourth year of the tournament and teams from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Darling Downs and Brisbane taking part. It all happens at Victory Park on Laidlaw Road, Woombye when Nambour Rugby Club will host the fast-paced form of the game the world has fallen in love with.
Sevens Rugby sees two, fast and furious seven-minute halves with interest staying on the field as there are a lot of tries scored. Crowds are in for a treat with so many young squads set to start to season in earnest. This year, the tournament winner will receive $1,000. Admission is free and locals of all ages are welcome to the ground.
Nambour Rugby was delighted with the response to the tournament last year, but know the event could not have be hosted if it wasn’t for the generous support of their valued sponsors: Palmwoods Hotel and the Woombye and Districts Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank.
Whilst we look forward to the Sevens tournament, thoughts soon turn to the Sunshine Coast Rugby competition, and with the Toads making the semi-finals last season there’s a lot to get excited about in 2017.
Rugby manager and tournament director, Ross Dale said the club knows consistency will be the essential ingredient if they want to take the ultimate step to the grand final dance in first and reserve grades this year.
“We know we have some great teams in the making here. We have one of the youngest A-Grade teams in the competition and I think we play the best game of any club out there, but steadiness is the key. Any way you look at it, we’re a club on the rise and that’s exciting for all Toads fans,” Ross said.
Training for the fifteen a side game is on in full force with trial matches for the upcoming season at home on March18 against Wynnum before the competition begins on March 25 away against Maroochydore.
