Developing Rugby Across the Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Rugby Union continues to launch a number of innovative ways to grow junior rugby participation across the region.

One such move was the appointment of a Sunshine Coast Rugby Union Development Officer in 2016 to work with schools, rugby clubs and across the community to promote increased participation in the sport.

“In 2016 Sunshine Coast Rugby Union saw the opportunity to attract more boys and girls of a primary school age to play rugby and we appointed our own Development Officer Grant Kay to lead the way here,” said Ian Brown, Chairman of the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union.

“With our junior players growing 16% in 2016 over 2015 we’re excited that Grant’s appointment will continue to grow this junior growth in rugby on the Sunshine Coast.

Grant is a terrific young man who grew up on the Sunshine Coast, attended Matthew Flinders Anglican College, played rugby at club, school and representative level, coached both men and women at New Zealand’s Canterbury University and achieved a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

For this coming season Grant has developed a Primary School Junior Rugby Calendar which kicks off in Term 1 and will provide girls and boys across Under-8, Under-10 and Under-12 age groups to be active with their friends playing rugby.

Grant will again organise Girls Development Days in March and November where Under-10 and Under-12 will have the opportunity to play Rugby 7’s. Late last year Grant one of these days saw over 100 young girls having a great day playing rugby,” said Mr Brown.
